ABSTRACT

Prof. Christian Kurts is the Director of the Institute of Experimental Immunology at the University in Bonn, Germany. He obtained his MD at the medical school in Göttingen and has been a research fellow at the Walter Elisabeth Hall Institute (WEHI, Melbourne, Australia) and the Monash Medical School (Melbourne, Australia). He is a trained nephrologist and became Professor in Bonn in 2003 and institute director in 2009. Prof. Kurts is the co-speaker of the research cluster “Organ Fibrosis” (SFB TR57), “Molecular Mechanisms and Chemical Modulation of Immune Regulation (SFB 704) and a member of the steering committee of the “Immune Sensitization” cluster of excellence. He is a member of the German National
Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and received several high ranking awards
like the renowned Gottfried-Wilhelm Leibnitz award in 2012 (the most important research award in Germany). Prof. Kurts and his group are interested in the mechanisms governing antigen-presentation and the ensuing immune response against infections and immune mediating diseases. Their main research projects focus on the mechanisms of antigen-
cross-presentation to cytotoxic CD8 T cells, peripheral immune tolerance of T and B cells and the role of dendritic cells in immune-mediated diseases, especially in kidney disease.
