This lecture will provide insights into how innovations are promoted by the newly created Innovation Fund (Innovationsfonds) and the political context in which the fund, worth € 300 million per year, is operating.

The lecture will start with an introduction to the German statutory health insurance system and the German National Association of Statutory Health
Insurance Funds (GKV-Spitzenverband). The association has a central role in the German healthcare provision and is a key player in the Innovation Fund.
The second part of the lecture will provide insight into the working mechanisms of the fund and how innovation in health care provision and health services research with high potential of directly improving health care is promoted by it.
