Lecture series Infection & Immunity: "GUT REACTIONS: HOST MICROBIOME INTERACTIONS IN THE INTESTINE IN HEALTH AND DISEASE" - Prof Fiona Powrie

17/10/2019 11:00 to 17/10/2019 14:00 (Europe/Luxembourg)

Esch/Alzette, Luxembourg

Speaker

Prof Fiona Powrie is Director of the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology, University of Oxford, England.

ABSTRACT

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is home to a large number and vast array of bacteria that play an important role in nutrition, immune system development and host defense. In inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) there is a breakdown in this mutualistic relationship resulting in aberrant inflammatory responses to intestinal bacteria. Studies in model systems indicate that intestinal homeostasis is an active process involving a delicate balance between effector and immune sup-pressive pathways. In this presentation I will discuss bacterial pathways that promote intestinal homeostasis and host defence and how these may be harnessed therapeutically.
