Discovered in 1993 [1], microRNAs (miRNAs) are small (20–23 nucleotides) single stranded non-coding RNAs that modulate gene expression through target messenger RNA degradation or translational inhibition. MicroRNAs are participating in multiple biological pathways in the heart. Circulating miRNAs are stable and have been proposed as novel biomarkers for personalized health care of patients with cardiovascular disease [2]. Using a system-based approach, we recently identified several miRNAs with prognostic capacity after myocardial infarction (MI) [3].
