NK cells and allergy. In Natural Killer Cells: At the Forefront of Modern Immunology. (Book Chapter)
NK cells are an important component of the innate immune response. They play a significant role in defense against tumor cells and viral infections, but also during human pregnancy. Until recently, few things were known about a possible role of NK cells in allergic diseases. Studies in animal models of asthma but also of peripheral blood from allergic patients suggest the possibility that NK cells also have a key function in inflammatory airway diseases. This hypothesis will be examined in this chapter. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
