To improve research on Parkinson, the Luxembourg Institute of Health is recruiting "control persons" (not suffering from Parkinson) especially men above 40 years in order to obtain clinical data and samples that will be compared to those of patients. Encounter with our 200th "control" participant to the study.

What’s your name/age?
My name is Jean-Nicolas, I’m 68 years old.

Where do you come from?
I’m Luxembourgish, coming from Pétange.

How did you hear about the NCER-PD study, and what motivated you in participating?
I’m currently taking part in one of your other studies: Memolingua*, which is taking place in the same building; I saw some signs about Parkinson and asked for more info. The lady from the reception kindly informed me about your NCER-PD study and I immediately got interested in participating. I’m retired and have therefore quite some free time; I find it natural to dedicate some of this time to serve a useful cause and help improve research.

How was your day here?
I was asked a lot of questions, did some neuropsychological tests and some analyses; everything went very well, I was very well treated (laugh)! Nothing was painful, on the contrary, it was pretty pleasant! The team is very welcoming and super nice, especially the nurse who took care of me.

What would you tell the people who are still hesitating in participating?
I can only recommend other people to join this study! It’s just a question of time, nothing else. Hurry up, it’s time to help!

What would you tell the researchers and staff working on the project?
I think they are doing a great job! I am pleased to bring my contribution and help them move forward! I would be pleased to participate in another study! I can only support them!

And to the Parkinson’s disease patients?
They can count on researchers! They will find ways to help them and improve their life!

NCER-PD stands for National Centre for Excellence in Research on Parkinson’s Disease. It represents a joint effort between 4 partners in Luxembourg that unite their expertise in Parkinson’s disease: Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedecine of the University of Luxembourg (LCSB), Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL), Integrated Biobank of Luxembourg (IBBL) and Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH). This collaboration between all the research institutions focusing on Parkinson’s disease in Luxembourg has been funded by the Fonds National de la Recherche (FNR) since spring 2015. In order to answer the urgent questions surrounding the occurrence of Parkinson’s disease, researchers need to analyse clinical data and samples from hundreds of patients and healthy control persons. The active participation in the Luxembourgish Parkinson’s study is therefore an important prerequisite for the success of the NCER-PD research project.

Pour contribuer à faire avancer la recherche sur la Maladie de Parkinson, le Luxembourg Institute of Health recrute des personnes « témoin » (non atteintes par la maladie) et tout particulièrement des hommes de plus de 40 ans, afin de recueillir  des données cliniques et des échantillons qui pourront être comparés à ceux des patients. Comment avez-vous entendu parler de l’étude NCER-PD, quelle a été votre motivation ?
Je participe actuellement à l’étude Memolingua* qui se déroule dans le même bâtiment, j’ai vu à la réception des affichages concernant Parkinson et j’ai demandé plus d’informations. La dame à l’accueil m’a dit que vous meniez également une étude sur Parkinson et j’ai tout de suite été intéressé. Je suis à la retraite, j’ai donc beaucoup de temps libre et cela me paraît naturel de le mettre à profit pour aider la recherche.

Comment s’est passée votre journée ici ?
On m’a posé beaucoup de questions, j’ai fait des tests neuropsychologiques, fait quelques analyses, tout s’est très bien passé, j’ai été très bien traité (rires)! Pas de douleur, le contact était plutôt agréable même ! L’équipe est très sympathique, surtout l’infirmière qui s’est occupée de moi (rires).

Que diriez-vous aux personnes qui hésitent encore à participer ?
Je ne peux que recommander, c’est simplement une question de temps rien d’autre ! Elles peuvent foncer !

Que diriez-vous aux chercheurs et équipes travaillant sur le projet ?
Je trouve que c’est super ce qu’ils font! Je suis ravi de pouvoir aider tant que je le peux et je serais partant pour participer à d’autres études si besoin! Je ne peux que les soutenir et les encourgager!

Et aux malades?
Qu’ils peuvent compter sur les chercheurs! Ils trouveront des moyens de les aider et améliorer leur vie.
