On 25th January 2018, the new framework agreement for the period from 2018 to 2021 between LIH and the Luxembourg Government was signed. To foster the development of biomedical research, the Government allocates 149.9 million Euro to LIH, which corresponds to a 26% increase compared to the 2014-2017 multiannual agreement.

The agreement was signed by Marc Hansen, Minister Delegate for Higher Education and Research, and Lydia Mutsch, Minister of Health, both representing the Government, and by Dr Gregor Baertz, President of LIH’s Board of Directors, Dr Ulf Nehrbass, CEO of LIH, and Dr Catherine Larue, CEO of IBBL -  Integrated BioBank of Luxembourg.

The resources will enable LIH to pursue its mission and vision. With its research and biobanking activities, the institute aims to impact on the population - on patients in particular - by performing and translating excellent biomedical research. LIH will move more and more towards patient-centric and application-inspired research and develop its expertise amongst others in the field of immune-oncology. LIH and the Government are in favour of an increased collaborative coordination between Luxembourgish research institutions. The framework agreement also emphases on the importance of communicating research activities to the broad public.

Among the key performance indicators stated in the agreement are the quality of the scientific production as well as the ability to translate research excellence towards applications. This is reflected by clinical trials, novel personalised therapy choices, the involvement of the biobank but also the ability to move towards commercial exploitation.
In total, the Luxembourg Government will invest 1.44 billion Euro in research and higher education for the next four years. The financial resources made available rise by 284 million Euro, corresponding to an increase of 25%, compared to the period from 2014 to 2017.
