Since last year, LIH’s Department of Infection and Immunity has established a strong strategic partnership with the Odense Research Centre for Anaphylaxis (ORCA), a clinical centre of excellence of the Odense University Hospital at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU). This collaboration in allergy research will allow combining the department’s expertise in immune cell function with ORCA’s widely recognised experience in clinical allergology.

‘The chief aim of our collaboration is to build a bridge between basic immunological research and clinical work’, stresses Prof Markus Ollert, Director of the Department of Infection and Immunity. ‘ORCA has a unique and very large repository of biological samples from highly characterised allergy patients, in particular anaphylactic patients, and an outstanding potential to conduct clinical research. In our department we have in turn a strong expertise in immunology and molecular allergology research namely in dissecting molecular structures, T cell function and immune signalling pathways. We also possess the required equipment and knowhow for large-scale data analyses. Using the samples from ORCA, we therefore aim at developing an “omics” approach to unravel the mediators of anaphylactic shock’, he explains further. The joint research efforts could ultimately facilitate early diagnosis and clinical care of anaphylaxis.

‘We have signed a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding, a formal collaborative agreement, beginning of 2015’, states Prof Ollert. Since then, both institutions have submitted two major joint grant proposals in Denmark and have already published jointly authored articles. Moreover, Prof Ollert and Prof Dirk Brenner, principal investigator in the department, were both appointed as professors at SDU during a ceremony at an inaugural mini-symposium on allergy research in November 2015.

‘The professorship appointment involves future teaching duties and confers us supervision rights to train doctoral candidates affiliated to SDU at LIH,’ explains Prof Brenner. ‘We have even agreed on developing a joint doctoral degree between SDU and the University of Luxembourg, with which our department is also working closely together’, adds Prof Ollert.

Depuis l'an dernier, le « Department of Infection and Immunity » du LIH a établi un solide partenariat stratégique avec le « Odense Research Centre for Anaphylaxis” (ORCA), un centre clinique d'excellence de l'Hôpital Universitaire d'Odense à la « Syddansk Universitet » (SDU). Cette collaboration scientifique sur les allergies permettra de combiner l'expertise du département dans le domaine du fonctionnement des cellules immunitaires avec l'expérience très reconnue du centre danois en allergologie clinique.

«L'objectif principal de notre collaboration est de construire un lien entre la recherche fondamentale en immunologie et le travail clinique», souligne le Prof. Markus Ollert, directeur du « Department of Infection and Immunity ». « ORCA possède une collection unique et très vaste d'échantillons biologiques bien caractérisés provenant de patients allergiques, en particulier de patients anaphylactiques, et a en outre un potentiel exceptionnel pour mener des recherches cliniques. De notre côté, nous disposons d’une forte expertise de recherche en immunologie et en allergologie moléculaire, notamment dans l’étude de structures moléculaires, du rôle des lymphocytes T et des voies de signalisation immunitaires. Nous possédons également l'équipement et le savoir-faire nécessaire pour conduire des analyses de données à grande échelle. En utilisant les échantillons d’ORCA, nous visons en fait à développer une approche « -omique » pour déterminer les médiateurs impliqués dans l’anaphylaxie », explique-t-il. Ultimement, les efforts de recherche conjoints pourraient faciliter le diagnostic précoce et les soins cliniques du choc anaphylactique.

« En 2015, nous avons signé un Mémorandum de Compréhension bilatéral, c’est-à-dire un accord de collaboration formel », indique le Prof Ollert. Depuis, les deux institutions ont pu soumettre deux demandes de financement au Danemark et ont déjà publié plusieurs articles scientifiques en co-auteurs. Par ailleurs, le Prof. Ollert et le Prof. Dirk Brenner, chercheur principal dans le même département, ont tous deux été nommés professeurs de la SDU en novembre 2015 lors d'une cérémonie à l’occasion d’un mini-colloque inaugural sur la recherche en allergologie.

« La nomination au titre de professeur implique de futures missions d'enseignement et nous confère des droits de supervision pour former des doctorants affiliés à la SDU au LIH », explique le Prof. Brenner. « Nous envisageons même l'élaboration d'un doctorat en co-tutelle entre la SDU et l'Université du Luxembourg, avec laquelle notre département travaille également en étroite collaboration », ajoute le Prof. Ollert.

Seit vergangenem Jahr besteht eine enge strategische Partnerschaft zwischen dem „Department of Infection and Immunity“ am LIH und dem „Odense Research Centre for Anaphylaxis“ (ORCA), ein klinisches Kompetenzzentrum des Odense Universitätsklinikums an der „Syddansk Universitet“ (SDU). Diese Kooperation in der Allergieforschung vereint das Know-how der Abteilung des LIH im Bereich der Immunzellfunktion mit der anerkannten Erfahrung des dänischen Zentrums in der klinischen Allergologie.

„Hauptziel der Zusammenarbeit ist es, eine Verknüpfung zwischen immunologischer Grundlagenforschung und klinischer Arbeit zu schaffen“, betont Prof. Markus Ollert, Direktor des „Department of Infection and Immunity“. „ORCA besitzt eine einzigartige und umfangreiche Sammlung an gut charakterisierten biologischen Proben von Allergiepatienten - vor allem von anaphylaktischen Patienten - und hat zudem ein herausragendes Potenzial in der klinischen Forschung. Unsere Abteilung hingegen hat Erfahrung in den Bereichen Immunologie und molekulare Allergologie und zwar insbesondere in der Erforschung von molekularen Strukturen, T-Zell-Funktionen und Immunsignalwegen. Wir besitzen zudem die erforderliche Infrastruktur und das Know-how für die Untersuchung großer Datenmengen. Mit den Proben von ORCA möchten wir eine "Omics"-Analyse durchführen, um die molekulare Basis des anaphylaktischen Schocks zu verstehen“, erklärt er weiter. Die gemeinsamen Forschungsanstrengungen könnten die frühzeitige Diagnose und die Behandlung von Anaphylaxie erleichtern.

„Anfang 2015 haben wir eine bilaterale Absichtserklärung unterzeichnet, also eine formelle Kooperationsvereinbarung“, bemerkt Prof Ollert. Seitdem haben beide Institutionen zwei große Förderanträge in Dänemark eingereicht und haben einige gemeinsam verfasste Publikationen veröffentlicht. Außerdem wurden Prof. Ollert und Prof. Dirk Brenner, Forschungsgruppenleiter in der Abteilung, beide im November 2015 im Rahmen eines Mini-Symposiums zum Thema Allergieforschung zu Professoren der SDU ernannt.

„Die Professur bedeutet zukünftige Lehrtätigkeit und erlaubt uns Doktoranden am LIH auszubilden, die an der SDU eingeschrieben sind“, erklärt Prof Brenner. „Wir beabsichtigen auch die Erstellung eines gemeinsamen Promotionverfahrens zwischen der SDU und der Universität Luxemburg, eine Universität mit der unsere Abteilung ebenfalls eng zusammenarbeitet", ergänzt Prof. Ollert.
